Travel options - find the best way for you
From quick flights to scenic rail journeys and leisurely ferries, there’s a travel option for every style, budget, and schedule. Here’s a guide to help you choose the route that suits you best.
Flying to Spain
Journey time: 4–6 hours door-to-door
Typical fares: from £40 one-way (economy, booked early)
Flying is the fastest way to reach Spain, with direct services from airports across the UK to destinations including Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, and Alicante. Flight times are just over two hours, though check-in and transfers mean the whole trip usually takes 4–6 hours.
Low-cost airlines keep fares competitive, making flying ideal for weekend getaways or short city breaks. Add-ons like luggage and seat selection can raise the price, but for speed and convenience, flying is hard to beat.
Travelling by Train
Journey time: 10–13 hours (London to Barcelona/Madrid)
Typical fares: £150–£320 one-way
Travelling by train gives you more flexibility to plan your own tailor-made route and not be limited by flight routes from the UK. Take the scenic route and let the journey be part of the adventure. Travel by Eurostar from London to Paris, then connect onto a high-speed TGV or AVE service into Spain. With spacious seating, power outlets, and onboard dining, it’s a comfortable and relaxing experience.
Best of all, you’ll arrive right in the city centre, avoiding airport transfers altogether. For those who prefer sustainable travel and a stress-free journey, the train is an excellent choice. Read our guide to understanding the trains in Spain.
Ferry from the UK
Journey time: 24–32 hours
Typical fares: from £90 per passenger • from £250 for car + two
Sailing from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Santander or Bilbao offers a very different start to your holiday. Ferries feel more like mini-cruises, complete with cabins, restaurants, and sea views. They’re perfect if you’d like to take your own car, carry extra luggage, or even bring your pets along.
While slower than other options, a ferry crossing can be a wonderfully relaxing way to ease into holiday mode.
Driving to Spain
Journey time: 15–20 hours of driving (usually spread across 1–2 days)
Typical costs: £280–£500 per car each way (fuel + tolls)
For ultimate freedom, why not drive? Hop across the Channel via Eurotunnel or short ferry, then enjoy a road trip through France into Spain. Driving lets you set your own pace, stop in charming towns along the way, and carry as much luggage as you like.
It’s ideal for families or groups, and particularly rewarding if you’re heading to rural destinations off the beaten path.
Coach Travel
Journey time: 20–30 hours
Typical fares: £60–£150 one-way
Coaches are the most budget-friendly way to travel to Spain. Services run from major UK cities with changes in Paris or other hubs. Expect long overnight journeys, but if cost is your top priority, coaches offer unbeatable value.
