While its dramatic setting and rich Moorish heritage make it a destination in its own right, Ronda’s strategic location in the Andalusian mountains also means it is a perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside. The town is easily accessible by bus or train to nearby destinations like the white villages of Grazalema, Setenil de las Bodegas, or the stunning El Torcal Natural Park. Several bus routes operate from Ronda to these surrounding villages, offering a relaxed way to explore the wider region.

For more rural destinations, renting a car might be necessary, although taxis can also be hired for these trips.

Here are some of the most rewarding day trips you can take from Ronda, all less than an hour away by car.

1. Setenil de las Bodegas (30 minutes)

Famed for its troglodyte dwellings built into overhanging rock formations, Setenil de las Bodegas offers a surreal yet charming experience. Stroll along streets where homes and cafés nestle beneath giant boulders, then sample local tapas featuring cured meats and traditional Andalusian sweets. The town’s unique architecture and quaint atmosphere make it a must-see.

2. Grazalema (35 minutes)

Part of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, this picturesque white village is surrounded by lush mountains and is known for its traditional woollen blankets and rainfall – the highest in Spain. Hiking opportunities abound, with trails leading to limestone peaks, cork oak forests, and hidden waterfalls. Grazalema also boasts excellent local cuisine, including hearty stews and game dishes.

3. Zahara de la Sierra (45 minutes)

Perched on a hilltop overlooking a turquoise reservoir, Zahara is the epitome of a postcard-perfect pueblo blanco. Explore the ruins of a Moorish castle, wander its narrow, flower-lined streets, or relax by the lake with a picnic. On warmer days, you can take a dip in the man-made beach area at the nearby reservoir.

4. Juzcar (25 minutes)

Dubbed “The Smurf Village” after being painted entirely blue for a film promotion, Júzcar remains proudly blue today. Beyond its novelty appeal, it offers scenic walks and forested trails ideal for families or casual hikers. The surrounding Genal Valley is especially beautiful in autumn, when chestnut trees paint the hillsides gold and amber.

5. El Burgo (50 minutes)

This lesser-known gem lies at the entrance to the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Ideal for those seeking tranquillity and nature, El Burgo offers rustic charm, scenic viewpoints, and access to hiking routes such as the Camino del Burgo, which winds through dramatic limestone landscapes.

6. Olvera (55 minutes)

Dominated by a striking Arab castle and a neo-Classical church perched side by side, Olvera is a blend of history and beauty. It’s also the starting point of the Vía Verde de la Sierra, a popular cycling and walking trail that follows a disused railway line through tunnels and over viaducts. The trail offers exceptional views and wildlife-spotting opportunities.

Tips for Travellers

All of these destinations are best accessed by car, allowing for flexibility and spontaneous detours. Roads in the region are generally well-maintained, though some can be winding — take your time and enjoy the views. Many of these towns offer excellent local dining, so be sure to allow time for  a leisurely lunch.

Ronda may be your starting point, but these enchanting nearby locales will give you a broader taste of Andalusia’s rural charm, history, and natural beauty — all within an easy hour’s reach.
