Oviedo Guide
Day trips from the city of Oviedo
While the city itself is a treasure trove of medieval architecture, charming streets, and inviting squares, it also offers a perfect starting point for a variety of day trips to explore the surrounding region. Whether you’re drawn to picturesque coastlines, dramatic mountain landscapes, or quaint rural villages, the area around Oviedo has something for every traveller. Here are some of the best day trips from Oviedo to make the most of your time in Asturias.
Covadonga and the Picos de Europa National Park
Just under a two-hour drive from Oviedo, Covadonga is one of Asturias’ most iconic sites. This small village is home to the Sanctuary of Covadonga, a stunning basilica nestled in the heart of the Picos de Europa mountains. The sanctuary is not only a religious site but also an important part of Spanish history, as it marks the site of the first Christian victory over the Moors in 722 AD, a turning point in the Reconquista.
The surrounding Picos de Europa National Park offers spectacular opportunities for hiking, nature walks, and wildlife spotting. The dramatic landscape of jagged peaks, lush valleys, and crystal-clear lakes is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. You can take a cable car ride up to the top of the peaks, or if you’re feeling adventurous, explore the many trails in the area.
Gijón: Coastal Charm and Seaside Relaxation
Located just 30 minutes from Oviedo, Gijón is the largest city in Asturias and offers a refreshing contrast to the inland city of Oviedo. Situated on the northern coast of Spain, Gijón is known for its vibrant maritime culture, scenic beaches, and lively promenade. A visit to the old fishing port, known as the Puerto de Gijón, provides a lovely opportunity to stroll along the water’s edge and enjoy the sea breeze.
Gijón also has a thriving cultural scene. The Museo Evaristo Valle is a must-see for art lovers, while the Museo del Ferrocarril showcases the region’s history with trains. After a day of sightseeing, relax in one of Gijón’s seaside cafés and enjoy some of the local seafood, such as the region’s famous cider (sidra) and grilled sardines.
Cangas de Onís: History and Natural Beauty
Just over an hour’s drive from Oviedo, Cangas de Onís is a small town that holds a significant place in Spanish history. It was the first capital of the Kingdom of Asturias following the Christian Reconquest and is home to the famous Roman Bridge (Puente Romano), which dates back to the 13th century. The bridge is one of the most photographed landmarks in the region, set against a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery.
Beyond its historical charm, Cangas de Onís serves as the gateway to the beautiful and rugged landscapes of the Picos de Europa. The town is located near the Río Sella, which is famous for kayaking and canoeing. If you enjoy outdoor activities, this is the perfect place to spend an adventurous day.
The Asturian Coast: Villaviciosa and the Beaches
If you’re looking to escape to the beach for the day, the Asturian coastline is full of beautiful, often untouched beaches. One of the closest beach towns to Oviedo is Villaviciosa, located about 40 minutes to the east. The town itself is charming, with traditional Asturian architecture and a lovely port area.
Just outside of Villaviciosa, you’ll find some of the region’s best beaches, such as Playa de Rodiles, a vast sandy beach that’s perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. It’s also a popular spot for surfers, making it an excellent choice for those who want to take to the waves or simply watch the surfers in action.
Llanes: Picturesque Coastal Town
A little further along the coast, about 1.5 hours from Oviedo, Llanes is a delightful town known for its pretty harbour, cobblestone streets, and historic buildings. Llanes is also surrounded by stunning beaches, such as Playa de Torimbia and Playa de Ballota, both offering dramatic coastal views and crystal-clear waters.
In addition to the beach, Llanes is home to several cultural attractions, including the Palacio de la Duquesa de Estrada, a 16th-century palace, and the Church of Santa María, a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. Llanes is also known for its ‘Cubos de la Memoria’, a series of brightly painted cubes along the waterfront, which have become an iconic symbol of the town.
The Village of Teverga and the Cave of La Peña
For those interested in prehistory, a visit to the village of Teverga, about an hour’s drive from Oviedo, offers the chance to explore the Cave of La Peña, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its prehistoric cave art. The cave is part of the Cave Art of Northern Spain, a collection of rock shelters and caves that display ancient paintings and engravings.
In addition to the cave, Teverga itself is a charming rural village surrounded by the natural beauty of the Asturias mountains. The area is perfect for hiking, and the nearby Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña, and Ibias Natural Park offers a tranquil environment to explore the region’s forests and rivers.
The Cider Route: Apple Orchards and Sidrerías
Asturias is famous for its cider, or ‘sidra’, and a day trip along the region’s Cider Route offers a unique opportunity to experience the culture of this iconic beverage. The route takes you through apple orchards and traditional sidrerías (cider houses), where you can learn about the history and production of sidra.
One of the most popular cider-producing areas is the town of Villaviciosa, but there are many towns across Asturias where you can visit local cider houses, enjoy a tasting, and see how the cider is traditionally poured from a height, a technique known as ‘escanciar’. The journey along the cider route also takes you through some of Asturias’ most picturesque landscapes, making it both a cultural and scenic experience.
